How I got obsessed with an American Accent.

People often ask me: why American? Even though I don't have a clear answer, I could chalk it up to the influence my favorite band Linkin Park had on me. Before I even spoke English I already knew all their lyrics by heart and was subconsciously absorbing their accent. Then I certainly cannot deny the impact of American TV shows on me. However, more than anything I'd say it was my desire to sound like a down-to-earth next door kind of girl which I believe suits my personality to a T.

How it helped me in my career.

Even when my English was a blend of several accents due to me constantly working on it, I did sound very decent. In every job interview I had, my future employer would compliment my accent. In Russia I scored a rather prestigious job teaching high level business English to corporate companies despite having zero experience with it. Then I moved to China and landed a job offer with a very competitive salary mostly due to my accent. This whole time I was pursuing my goal to sound as native-like as possible, so when I set my mind on moving to Vietnam, I was offered a position in a company where every single other teacher was native (and that was the biggest ELT center in the country). Of course, I cannot underestimate the effect of my accent on my blogging either. When I first started back in 2016, I got so much positive feedback on it, that I felt empowered and to a certain extent obliged to keep at it.

✅ How my own pronunciation transformed throughout these years

It's not a secret that I started studying phonetics back in uni and it was the outdated version of a British accent. That course did provide me with a solid foundation but I had to stand up for myself a lot due to some teachers being resentful of my predisposition to an American way of pronouncing things. I was obsessed with sounding native-like for many years and would tirelessly practice every single day, however it's taken me around a decade to polish my pronunciation and eliminate that mixture of an accent I acquired unintentionally. Today I'm proud to say that I sound as American as a non-native speaker possibly can.

How I started teaching it to others.

One of my ex-students turned to me for help. He was working for an American company and his English was already rather advanced. However, every time he had work meetings, people would struggle to understand him or he would fail to make out what they were saying to him. During his business trips in the states he would experience even more embarrassment when people in coffee shops wouldn't understand his order. He also wanted to become more fluent. That's how I began to teach phonetics to him and studying it even more profoundly myself along the way. Throughout the 5 years I've been solely focusing on helping others with their accent, I've developed my own strategy and style, upgraded my courses multiple times, improved my explanations, came up with handy techniques and subsequently mastered my own accent.
