Mom types in American English

Most American TV shows are set in a typical American family. A typical American family usually has a typical mom, who can be labeled as one of the following types. If you love binge-watching sitcoms, chances are you’ve come across those terms. Let’s take a look at common slang "mom names" and uncover what they actually mean.

1. Soccer mom ⚽️

A typical mom who lives in the suburbs, puts her career on hold and drives her children in her minivan to numerous extracurricular activities, such as soccer practice (hence the name) all day. Soccer moms can come across as spoiled, mediocre women whose lives revolve solely around their kids, which is why the term "soccer mom" is often considered an insult.

2. Helicopter mom 🚁

literally hovers over their children like a helicopter. Those moms are usually over controlling, extremely involved in their child’s every move, and try to micromanage every aspect of their lives and education without letting their children grow into independent adults. They would hold their babies hands to never let them fall or call teachers about unfair grades at school.

3. Tiger mom 🐅

a slang term that describes a strict mother who only wants the best for her children. She is highly demanding, gives tough love, and expects her children to have only the best grades and success in extracurricular activities such as music or sports. The term is commonly used to refer to an Asian mother, drawing a parallel to the strict parenting style in households of Asian families, but it isn’t limited to only them.

4. Mama bear 🧸

a positive slang term referring to a mother who is overprotective of her children and would never let anyone hurt them. Contrary to helicopter and tiger moms, mama bear gives a lot of love to her children and provides an assertive, positive influence on them. The term itself can also be used to describe an overprotective person (typically a woman) in a group of friends who takes responsibility for them and cares for them.
